File upload issues
What's allowed, what isn't, and how to fix the most common upload errors.
Allowed file types
- Documents — PDF, Word (.docx), plain text.
- Images — JPG, PNG, GIF, WebP, HEIC.
- Code — most common source-code extensions.
- Slides — PowerPoint (.pptx).
Heads up
Executable files (.exe, .bat, .sh, .msi), disk images, and password-protected archives aren't accepted.
Size limits
Default per-file limit is 50 MB. Educators can lower this on a per-assignment basis. School plans can request a higher limit if needed for specific use cases — email [email protected].
Common errors
- “File type not allowed.” — try converting to PDF (the universal fallback).
- “File too large.” — compress the PDF, or split into parts.
- “Upload failed — try again.” — check your network. The upload area auto-retries; if it gives up after a few tries, reload the page and try again.
Tips
Tip
For high-stakes assignments (a final paper, a thesis), upload a few minutes before the deadline rather than the last 30 seconds — large files take a moment to process and you don't want to be racing the clock.
